Improving Student Performance with ILS Based Student-Teacher Pairings

چکیده

Students are often assigned to instructors by student schedule or request. We present findings that assigning students based on learning style similarity can improve learning. assume teach consistent with their style, and use the Felder Silverman Index of Learning Styles (ILS) describe as a vector in R4. examine effect grade difference function “distance” between . X2 tests show (N=300) who were more similar (nearer) instructor performed better (p-value: 0.000453), linear regression indicates performance could up 2% being instructor. Our study shows that, our three novel approaches (standardized measurement, differenced grades, consideration different norms), data indicate mild support for using idea behind meshing hypothesis provide recommendations student-teacher pairing.

Individual Teacher Incentives and Student Performance

This paper is the first to systematically document the relationship between individual teacher performance incentives and student achievement using the United States data. We combine data from the National Education Longitudinal Survey on schools, students, and their families with our own survey conducted in 2000 regarding the use of teacher incentives. This survey on teacher incentives has uni...

Teacher-Student Racial Congruence, Teacher Perceptions, and Test Performance

Objective. This research explores the seldom-addressed question of whether teacherstudent racial congruence conditions the impact of teacher perceptions on performance. Methods. Multipopulation LISREL models (utilizing data from the NELS) compare the effect of white teachers’ perceptions on African-American standardized test performance to the corresponding effect among white students. Parallel...

Teacher-Student Curriculum Learning

We propose Teacher-Student Curriculum Learning (TSCL), a framework for automatic curriculum learning, where the Student tries to learn a complex task and the Teacher automatically chooses subtasks from a given set for the Student to train on. We describe a family of Teacher algorithms that rely on the intuition that the Student should practice more those tasks on which it makes the fastest prog...

Improving Mathematics Teacher Practice and Student Learning through Professional Development

We propose to study how to provide, on a large scale, the professional development and continuing support teachers need to improve student achievement in mathematics. Over five years of a longitudinal study, we will examine how the use of specific research-based instructional strategies in the classroom— supported by professional development and highly rated curriculum materials—relate to lasti...

Error Rates in Measuring Teacher and School Performance Based on Student Test Score Gains Error Rates in Measuring Teacher and School Performance Based on Student Test Score Gains

This paper addresses likely error rates for measuring teacher and school performance in the upper elementary grades using value-added models applied to student test score gain data. Using realistic performance measurement system schemes based on hypothesis testing, we develop error rate formulas based on OLS and Empirical Bayes estimators. Simulation results suggest that value-added estimates a...
